Cambazlı Church

A Byzantine Church In Silifke

After visiting the ancient cities of Uzuncaburç and Olba, we headed for the Cambazlı Church in the Silifke district of Mersin province.

This church was connected with Olba, Uzuncaburc and the Maidens castle by a paved road. Although no signs are directing us to the church in Cambazlı village (or we missed it), the locals gave us (not always clear) directions.

A Door To The Past

Finally arriving at the church we had mixed feelings about it, as usual restoration of this kind of buildings is a delicate matter. How far must (can) you go with restoring parts which are not there anymore.

The restored building can quickly get an artificial appearance with all these new materials in it. We have seen this several times in other ancient sites like Aspendos and Rhodiapolis. But in this case, the result is worth the trip.

Ruins Around The Church

The Inside Of The Church Looks Impressive.

One side of the church is entirely closed, with no windows, only a wall. There are two rows of columns in the length of the building.

One Of The Entrances Of  Cambazlı Church

Corinthian columns on top of each other, the 2nd row of columns is destroyed. The apse and Temenos walls of the church are restored. Even though the apse was damaged, it is now in good condition thanks to the restoration.

Not many tourists visit this little church because, for many people, the coastal road and beaches look more attractive.

Where Is Cambazlı Church?

It is possible to go to Cambazlı church in two different ways. Via Limonlu Mahallesi or via Hüseyinler Village. If you don’t have a car, you can get to the village centre by village bus, and after walking for 10-15 minutes, you can reach the church. Check the map below.

Choosing a time other than summer for a visit will allow you to have a pleasant stroll without being affected by the scorching heat.
