ANDRIAKE

By Slowtravelguide

You might ask, is Andriaka in Kalkan? no, it is not. But it is very close to Kas, even closer. But most importantly, it is a good place to take children to visit, so it is also one of the interesting things about Kalkan. This is why children will experience this interesting ancient site of Andriac and have a realistic stage in the old harbour area.

ANDRIAKE: A NICE CHOICE FOR KIDS

The great thing about this site that it is not too stretched out in its current state. Together with the walking paths, bird-observation terraces, and the lifelike staging of the old harbor area, including the 16m Roman-era boat, it makes it accessible for children. They get a real sense of how things were and are fascinated by the objects depicting history. Andriake was an important port for the Lycian Union and the harbor of ancient Myra, situated at the mouth of the ancient river Andrakos and dating back to the 3rd century BC.

Over time, it became the base of the Lycian fleet, and it was also the port where apostle Paul and his entourage changed ships on their way to Rome. To further develop the grain trade, which had become important, a 6.000m3 granary or granarium was built. It has seven rooms, is 56m long and 32m wide, and is the largest structure at the site. It was carefully restored to house the Museum of Lycian Civilizations. Andriake lost its position as an important grain trading center when the silting of the port began.

Among the remains visible today, you will find the granary, of course, but also trade areas and harbor structures, a Roman bath, a synagogue and churches, and some monuments. One of the more fascinating places in Andriake is probably the 24-meter long, 12-meter wide, and six-meter deep cistern. So make sure not to miss it during your visit!

HOW TO GET TO ANDRIAKE?

The site is located a few kilometres from Demre and its Saint Nicholas Church, which is about 50km east of Kaş and approximately 80km southwest of Çıralı and Olympos. From the current small harbour where the shipyard is, you can take a boat trip to the sunken city of Kekova to complete your day out.

Gerga

Ready to embark on a journey filled with intrigue and wonder? Look no further than Gerga, a hidden sanctuary nestled in the mystical Latmos Mountains of Caria.

Birgi

Birgi, you’ve probably never heard of it. And yet here we are claiming this may well be one of the prettiest villages in Turkey. Technically speaking, Birgi isn’t a village, it’s a small town not too far away from Ödemiş in the province of Izmir

Knidos

Some ancient ruins seem to have it all: a spectacular setting, two harbours, a lighthouse that’s been bombarded with pictures, and some good stories to end it all. Knidos falls into this category.
