Kekova

And It’s Sunken City

By Slowtravelguide

The sunken cities of Simena and Kekova

This little archipelago in front of the Turkish coast near Kaş is like paradise on Earth. Not only nature is astounding but the history of this area is not only visible on land but also under the water.

Visiting a sunken city sounds a little odd. The principle of a sunken city is that it is underwater, so it is not very visible. But in Kekova and Simena, some parts were only partly submerged, and the clear water gave them a mysterious feeling.

In my opinion, travelling by boat is the ideal way of travelling when it comes to slow travel.

The boat trip around Kekova and Simena is undoubtedly one of the more beautiful trips you can do there.

Nature is amazing, and the history is visible; therefore, the visit is just a continuous moment of surprise.

Take a boat with local fishermen.

When arranging a boat trip to Kekova, you have many options. The popularity of this place in mind, you will find several organised boat trips to take you to Kekova and Simena.

Usually, this involves an amount of time spent in two locations. You do like we did and ask local fishers to take you there. This is a great way to contribute to the local community while adding a valuable experience to your trip.

In our case the fisherman kept mending his nets, only stopping with that to point out things worth seeing or knowing along the way.

The wait at the small jetty didn’t bother him at all because he could go on with his activities until we were ready with our visit.

An excellent way to organize the visit!

KEKOVA sailing past

Kekova is a small Turkish island near Demre, very pleasant. The uninhabited island is located opposite the villages of Kaleköy and Üçağız.

The partially sunken ruins on the north side are the result of an earthquake in the second century.

There are remains of Dolikisthe, a dockyard, steps and stairs everywhere, gates and the remains of a Byzantine church.

A wonderful sight.

One of Simena’s most famous attractions must be the underwater sarcophagus in front of the peninsula. But overall, the atmosphere of this place is excellent. Friendly locals who are hospitable and the scenery is charming.

The castle of the Knights of Rhodes is well-preserved, and you can enjoy the magnificent view of the bay.

Everywhere You Look, Water, Rocks And History

A lot of guides mention that Simena is only accessible by boat. While it is the most convenient way to access this gorgeous spot, you can hike to it too.

Make your way around Kaleüçağiz bay and walk towards Simena Kale, which is visible from Kaleüçağiz. Once at the Kale, make your way down to Simena’s waterside pensions and restaurants. You might not want to take on this challenge carrying heavy suitcases, but this is a very doable hike with a simple backpack.

Practical information for visiting SIMENA and KEKOVA in Turkey

Even going to heaven requires some preparation. Simena and Kekova are located between the cities of Kaş and Demre.

Both can be easily reached by boat. Simena is located on the mainland, but you must enter on foot. The easiest way is to take public transport or drive to Kaleüçağiz, and then take a boat from there.

Very Impressive Sacophagi On Simena

If you plan to stay overnight, your options are divided into Kaleüçağiz or Simena (Kaleköy in Turkey today), which are mainly family-run pensions. If your stay in Simena, find out if your accommodation includes the cost of picking up the boat from Kaleüçağiz. Both places have their own advantages and disadvantages; Kaleüçağiz is easily accessible; Simena’s advantage lies in the picturesque surroundings.

When you choose your stay carefully, you can enjoy the most charming scenery during breakfast. Starting a new day from here, almost next to the immersed Lycian sarcophagus, looking at the world.

Off-season visits mean you must accept most pensions and restaurants are in sleep mode. This means they are open after booking. You can dine in a space dedicated to you. The terrace furniture is stacked in the corner, but the local cuisine is freshly cooked on firewood.
