MAMURE CASTLE

Feet In The Water Landmark In Anamur

By Slowtravelguide

Not every castle is located on a mountain overlooking the area; some are strategically positioned near the sea. With its solid walls and towers immersed in the Mediterranean Sea, it looks like a difficult to conquer castle.

Its history dates back to Roman times, the surface of 23.500 square meters, most of which have been restored.

When travelling by road on the coastline between Alanya and Mersin, Mamure Castle is an excellent stop, and if you are travelling with children, it will undoubtedly be the first choice.

Just a reminder; when they built Mamure Castle, they did not consider the safety of children, so please watch out for your children before they escape to conquer the world.

Magnificent Mamure Castle

Where Is Mamure Castle?

Mamure Castle is located 6 km southeast of Anamur, an impressive seaside landmark connecting Alanya and Mersin on the main D400 road.

From the road, Mamure Castle looks much smaller than it in reality is.

It was restored several times during the Ottoman reign in the 15th, 16th and 18th centuries when part of it was used as a caravanserai more recently.

Without a doubt, Mamur Castle is one of the most famous and best-preserved castles in Turkey. During its existence, it has undergone many changes. We’ll focus on the most important ones.

Mamure Castle’s Mosque

High walls separate the castle’s three central courtyards, and in the outer courtyard of the court, you’ll find an Ottoman-style mosque built by the Karamanids.

The former shop is in the same area, near the entrance that used to be the castle of Mamure.

Roman Era

The exact date of construction of Mamure Castle is unknown, but in 1988 they uncovered mosaic floors dating back to the late Roman era of the 3rd to 4th centuries AD.

Some say it may have served at some point in its history as the outer protective castle of the nearby Anemurium, whose origins date back to the 4th century BC.

The Ramparts Of The Castle In Anamur

From Byzantines To The Seljuks

After the Byzantines enlarged the castle its ruins were occupied again in 1221 by the Anatolian Seljuk Sultan Aladin Kubat I during the Crusades.

The sultan built an enormous palace on the foundation, later incorporated into the Beylik of Karaman, or Duchy of Karaman.

After the enemy occupied and destroyed Anamur, Mahmut of Karaman took the castle and renamed it Mamure Castle after it was restored. Mamur means prosperity, referring to its glorious history.

What To Expect From MAMURE CASTLE?

When in the area, Mamure Castle is worth visiting, if only for its spectacular location. Mamure is a moated castle on land where the entire family of terrapins live in the water.

Expect a combination of rocks and soft sand by the sea, all equally stunning as a backdrop. The 39 towers are connected by the ramparts and offer great views of the castle.
