EĞIRDIR: CITTASLOW AT THE LAKE IN TURKEY

One may notice that there aren’t many options when searching for things to do in Eirdir. We think that’s the main objective! That’s what draws the allure of İirdir.Nestled in the centre of the lake district, Eğirdir offers modest facilities to mostly Turkish tourists, making it the ideal getaway into nature. Expect nothing of the sort in the way of upscale clubs, English breakfasts, or all-inclusive lodging. That is not the reason visitors come to İirdir.

This laid-back lakeside city remains one of those Turkey spots where you really experience the essence of the nation. To be honest, that’s all you require. You can’t help but be captivated to the lake and its picturesque mountain scenery when strolling around İirdir. They provide the ideal setting for unwinding and escaping the heat.

Taking In The View At The Lake

SELJUK BUILDINGS AND BYZANTINE REMAINS AT THE HEART OF THE CITY

Like many things, appearances can be deceiving, and Eğirdir is no exception. In the city centre, you can see the ruins of a brilliant past. The Byzantine castle of Eğirdir is today little more than a wall and a gate, but when it was constructed in 400 BC, it is easy to believe that it was a formidable structure. The view of the lake from the top of Erdir Castle is now its greatest feature.

The Seljuk testimonies are more remarkable. Central Eğirdir is dominated by the Hızır Bey Mosque and the nearby Dündar Bey Medresesi. The structures have undergone exquisite restoration and date back to the early 1200s. A lot of the work is attributed to local craftsman Hamidoğullari, as stated on one of the information boards.

STONE-BASED WOODEN HOUSES AND FAMILY-RUN PENSIONS ON YEŞILADA

Yeşilada is no longer an island, despite what its name would have you believe. There’s no reason not to explore the former island, which is joined to the mainland by a causeway (yeşil = green, ada = island). Prior to Turkey and Greece exchanging populations after the war, the island was home to Greeks. The tiny alleys of this peaceful little paradise are made even more charming by a few of the older wooden and stone homes.

The Aya Stefanos Church is one more remnant of Greek culture. Yeşilada is quite beautiful. This little peninsula includes several excellent fish restaurants by the water and modest, family-run pensions where you can spend the night in a clean bed. If you’re staying here, make sure to see the stunning dawn and sunset over the lake!

PRACTICAL INFORMATION FOR YOUR VISIT TO EĞIRDIR

If you are not self-driving, Eğirdir is best reached by bus with regular services from nearby Isparta or once-a-day runs to places like Antalya, Konya, Pamukkale, or Cappadocia. Beware that Eğirdir is inland, with a very different climate from the tourist resorts on the coast. Check the weather forecast and come prepared. Consider extending your stay, using Eğirdir as a base to explore other lesser-known places in Turkey such as amazing Sagalassos or a few other lakes in the lake district, including the national parks in the area.

Check out these good-value pensions in Eğirdir. Note that staying on Yeşilada is usually quieter than the slightly busier center of the working town. At the beginning of autumn, you’ll notice large piles of apples beside the road. The area is famous for its apple orchards, and when autumn comes, and the fruit is being picked, the cooperatives collect it at the side of the road to take it to factories where the harvest will transform into fruit juice or vinegar. If you have a weak spot for foliage, autumn is the perfect time to visit Eğirdir.
