Akyaka

A Cittaslow In turkey

By Slowtravelguide

Akyaka or Gökova Bay? You don’t have to worry if you haven’t heard of it; many people haven’t.

Akyaka is an attractive, small village in south-western Turkey, near Marmaris, Datça and Dalaman airport. In winter, it is a sleepy village at the far end of Gökova Bay, on the Kadın Azmak River.

During the summer – especially when visiting on holiday in Turkey – this place is full of life; mainly Turkish tourists seek refreshment by swimming in the river with the ducks and geese.

One Of The Cittaslow In Turkey

Akyaka is the second Cittaslow in Turkey, with distinguished architecture and culture.

This is the ideal place for a day trip from Turkey’s popular tourist destinations such as Marmaris and Bodrum.

The Different Ottoman Architecture Of Akyaka

One of the main characteristics of Akyaka is its Ottoman architecture. The Akyaka streets are an irresistible attraction of beautifully restored houses with fantastic woodwork and colourful bougainvillaea, surrounded by pine forests and a great mountain backdrop.

No Greek architecture here!

Akyaka is truly Turkish, which makes it so unique. It is beautiful, accessible, and aimed at demanding tourists, nature lovers, and food lovers.

Walking the streets of Akyaka to reach the river or the beach is not a chore as it is a feast for the eyes and one of the main reasons why this town is worth visiting.

An architect named Nail Çakırhan started restoring the old houses in the ’70s. New buildings must be combined with the same style of classical Ottoman architecture, giving Akyaka a unique visage.

Admiring The Catch Of The Day

A Beach, A Pier And A Kitesurfers’ Paradise

One of the advantages of Akyaka is that it is more than just a picturesque seaside town. It has a real beach and it can be very crowded, but what else can you expect on a hot August day that falls on a Turkish holiday?

Still, Akyaka has something for everyone. The beach was full of people, whilst the adjacent pier offered us the peace we loved.

If you are more of an action person, you will love that Akyaka is a paradise for kitesurfers! It’s fun and colourful to watch!
