HOW TO GET TO BUTTERFLY VALLEY?

Do you know what Butterfly Valley is? Situated near Ölüdeniz, it’s a popular destination for tourists taking selfies when visiting Fethiye. The answer is obvious: Butterfly Valley is one of those unique places created by nature that just leaves you speechless. The beach is ringed by nearly vertical, 350-meter-tall cliffs, creating a natural sanctuary in the valley. At the end of the valley, a waterfall creates a tiny creek that flows through the Mediterranean. The name of the valley comes from its multitude of butterflies, so beware of spoilers ahead.

BUTTERFLY VALLEY: AN ISOLATED SLICE OF PARADISE

Contrary to popular belief, the best way to visit Butterfly Valley is not by automobile to the village of Faralya, which is situated above the valley. Of course, the view is breathtaking as you approach, but there are no parking spaces or easy access points from above. People used to walk down to the beach and valley after a few fatal accidents, but officials have put up warning signs that discourage or forbid hiking the trail.
We had originally planned to show you both how to take a boat to Butterfly Valley and how to walk there. But since a warning sign in the valley specifically forbids it, we have chosen to follow the advice in this guide on how to safely approach Butterfly Valley, Turkey.

HOW TO GET TO BUTTERFLY VALLEY FROM OLUDENIZ

If Faralya is your base, you can go to Ölü by dolmuş or local bus. Buses depart Kabak every hour from 8:30 am to 8:30 pm (and every half hour during peak hours) during the season, which runs from May to October. Remember to make the most of your current location by looking down at the vista above. You won’t be sorry! At nearly all hours of the day, there are frequent bus connections to Ölüdeniz whether your base is in Fethiye or somewhere else in the region.

Once in Ölüdeniz, you don’t have to worry about where to get off the bus. Every time, the dolmuş stops precisely at the edge of the water. That’s the point of departure.A sign that reads, “Butterfly Valley – Shuttle Boat – Kelebekler Vadisi,” should help you find the shuttle boat. Three times a day, the shuttle sets sail. leaving at 11 a.m., 2:00 p.m., and 6 p.m. from Ölüdeniz. It won’t be present till 30 minutes prior to departure.

Purchase your ticket at the station. A return ticket in 2020 costs 50TL per person. Be mindful not to miss the final shuttle boat departing from the valley! At five o’clock in the evening, it departs. You’ll need to hire a taxi boat if you don’t make it, and it will probably cost you at least 250TL.

WHAT TO EXPECT FROM BUTTERFLY VALLEY

Butterfly Valley is attractive for several reasons. Because this region can only be reached, theoretically, by boat, it has remained relatively undiscovered. We say relatively because there are facilities on the premises. There’s a restaurant, a cafe, and a huge camping space. The benefit is that you don’t have to worry about discomfort and can enjoy a relaxing day out.
The valley is a wonderful place to spend a day unwinding in the shade of its many trees or grapevines while enjoying the cool sea breeze. The management is exerting a great deal of effort to maintain the safety of the area and its environs. However, because Butterfly Valley is a stop on the daily sailing route of the huge pirate party boats that leave from Ölüdeniz, it is sometimes overrun by tourists. It’s a quick stop, but it may be quite taxing. Other than that, especially in the off-peak hours, this is a quiet and pleasant place.

The temples are in the center of the site and require a bit of an effort to imagine what they must have looked like when still in their full glory.

WHAT ABOUT BUTTERFLIES?

There are times when people regret the lack of butterflies. You may be sure that this area is still home to approximately 80 distinct species of butterflies. June is the best month to watch butterflies, so if you visit too early or too late, you might not see any. Alternatively, if there are a lot of people there, you might be too loud and intrusive. When we went here in May, we counted at least fifty butterflies. And most of the butterflies are around the waterfall in the rear of the valley. Unfortunately, unless you come with a prearranged day trip, there is a little entrance fee to that part of Butterfly Valley.

Is it worth the effort? Everything will be determined by your expectations and the quantity of visitors present at the same time. There’s a short route that leads to the waterfall at the bottom of the valley. Make sure you wear water-resistant shoes with great traction if you want to see the waterfall up close without having to worry about slipping off a rock. Flip-flops are not going to cut it. There’s some rock climbing close to the waterfall’s peak, so don’t expect a well-maintained path.
In relation to waterfalls, bear in mind that Kabak also provides waterfall chasing! Either way, we believe the main attraction of Butterfly Valley is in the beach area, or rather, the lush area directly behind it. That plus its privacy makes it a great spot to relax in the shade on a hot day.
